Shakshuka is one of the best dishes to make at home, in my opinion. It satisfies pretty much every single criteria I can think of. It's easy, quick, delicious, healthy, and full of pantry ingredients. As Andrew (known as Babish online) tells us, shakshuka can be personalized, customized, and regionalized in countless ways. To me, the only absolute constants would be tomato and egg. Once you have those two, add whatever you like to the tomato sauce, plop some eggs in, and steam till done.
I personally didn't stray too much from the "classic" shakshuka recipe I followed the tradition of sautéing some onion and garlic, toasting the spices, adding tomato sauce, reducing, and cooking the eggs. I added a few slight tweaks to the sauce, which were pretty subtle. Instead of salt, I seasoned it with maggi seasoning, a soy sauce-like product which brings a lot of umami. I also substituted cayenne pepper or fresh chilis for canned chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, which were both spicy and smoky, which I really like. I garnished the way Babish recommends though, with cilantro, feta, and a drizzle of honey. It was great.
